Description

De Valkyrja is a concept that I am developing in my spare time. The plan is to create a series of battle-maidens type of characters, each specialises in different weapon, and in some way correspond to the image of the valkyries in Norse myth.

In my own version of story, these maidens were choosen by the temple as they were believed to be the valkyries. They were then sent to the battle field to aid the side that's favoured by the god in an indirect way -- since they are the valkyries, their presence alone could cause the rise and fall of morale to either side. As elite riders, warriors and with great team-work, they usually would manage to stay alive at the end of battle and keep up their reputation as the valkyries

Like the valkyries in the myth, they are fair and beautiful, and among them there's one who instead of a particular type of weapon, wields the infamous raven banner which is usually pure white, and only shows signs in form of a raven just before the battle to reveal which side would win the victory.

This is the first completed piece of this project. Hope I've made it work :)

I really like the face detail.
The pose, colors and composition work for me too.
I think the whole painting would look better if the head was bigger!?
With the low horizon I think the face would be viewed more from below.
Still an amazing image.

That's some beautiful colour work!

I don't have a problem with the character's pose and proportions. She's viewed from below, so there's perspective distortion that makes her head and upper body appear smaller than they would if she where viewed straight on. She's looking down at the viewer, rather than gazing off into the distance, which I think gives the image more impact.

good work on the image, the only thing i really don't like is that wing and the name "inger", they distract too much.

Thanks all for the comments. I agree that the wing-logo and type should go, and I have updated with the cleaner version :)

The perspective may indeed look a bit unrealistic. I worked the figure out of my head and tried to kept her vaguely 8 head-lengths (she's quite tall, as all the valkyries) with slight increase
from head to toe in order to induce the upshot feel, but might just overdo it :(

The blue in the background (river) doesnt look too flash. The feathers are cool. The shin guards could maybe use a few more frills. And a more detailed backbround would be good.

Most of what could be said has already been said. Otherwise, full marks.

Nice style. She has got a pretty face, and the shadows are well done. I agree about the background though.

I really like the costume design--especially the styling of the armor pieces. The right hand seems a bit like a mit--hard for me to make out the clenched hand inside the glove. And a more definative horizon line can better establish the figure's perspective.

I really like the slight contrapasto and the direct gaze. Very good work!

Nice perspective here. :) I agree her body doen't looks quite correctly proportioned from this angle--especially her upper body, but it's quite a hard thing to do. Other than that, great costume and movement create by the diagonal lines of the feathers and her bow. A top piece from you.

Thanks all very much for the comments and suggestions. I read them carefully and began to realised that I did get lazy with the background, again.

I added more elements to it and updated the artwork. Hopefully this has improved the image not the other way round :)

I think the armor on her legs look a little fake compared to the rest of her, like they were made of plastic. Too vibrant, maybe?
Otherwise an absolutely stunning picture. Awesome feathers.
